How detection works
AI image detection looks for patterns left by generation and editing.
Most AI picture detectors do not “recognize” a prompt or magically know who made an image. They compare the file against patterns learned from real camera images, AI-generated images and edited media. The result is a confidence signal, not proof.
Pixel-level texture
Classifiers inspect color transitions, edges, skin texture, repeated patterns and detail consistency. Generated images can have smooth or oddly dense texture where real cameras usually produce messier sensor detail.
Hidden frequency patterns
Some detectors look beyond visible details and analyze frequency-domain signals. Diffusion models, upscalers and compression can leave subtle statistical traces that are hard to see by eye.
Generation artifacts
Hands, teeth, text, logos, reflections, shadows, jewelry, eyeglasses and object boundaries are common review zones because generators often struggle with exact physical consistency.
Metadata and provenance
EXIF, C2PA credentials, editing software and timestamps can help, but social platforms often strip metadata. Missing metadata does not prove AI generation.
Classifier confidence
A detector usually returns a probability or confidence score. High confidence means “similar to known synthetic examples,” not “certainly fake.” Low confidence does not guarantee the image is real.
